Our weight loss clinic is a private, pharmacist-led weight management service at our Harrow chemist. It starts with a confidential consultation covering your health history, measurements and BMI, followed by a clinical assessment of whether treatment is appropriate for you. Where it is, we monitor and review you at regular intervals alongside lifestyle support.
What our weight management service involves
Everything starts with a consultation in our private room, and it lasts 20 to 30 minutes. We take a full history: your weight and health over time, what you have already tried, any long-term conditions, every medicine and supplement you take, allergies, family history, and whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy. We measure your height and weight to calculate your BMI, and we usually take your waist measurement and your blood pressure at the same visit.
That assessment is the service. It exists to work out whether any treatment is appropriate for you at all and, if it is, what monitoring you would need alongside it. Our pharmacist explains the options that apply to your situation face to face: what they do, how they are taken, the side effects to expect, and what would make us stop. Nothing is supplied on the day unless the assessment supports it.
Bring a list of your current medicines, or the boxes themselves, along with any recent blood test or blood pressure readings you have. If you are registered with a GP we will usually want to share information with them, with your consent, because weight management is safer when everyone treating you can see the whole picture.
Who the weight loss clinic is for, and who it is not for
Weight management services in the UK generally use BMI as a starting point, with a lower threshold where someone also has a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea. Adjusted thresholds apply to people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African and African-Caribbean family background, who develop those conditions at a lower BMI. BMI alone does not decide anything, though. The assessment does, and the service is for adults only.
Some people are not suitable and we will say so plainly. That includes pregnancy, breastfeeding and actively trying to conceive; a current or past eating disorder; certain thyroid and pancreatic conditions; and situations where another medicine or health problem you have would make treatment unsafe. Sometimes the right answer is that your GP needs to be involved first, or that a different problem should be dealt with before weight is tackled. We would rather turn someone away than treat them unsafely.
We do not promise results. Nobody honestly can, because response varies enormously between individuals and any medical treatment for weight works alongside changes to eating and activity rather than instead of them. If what you are looking for is a guaranteed figure or a before-and-after story, this is not that kind of service.
Monitoring, review and lifestyle support
Weight management is ongoing care, not a single appointment. Where treatment is started, we book you in for regular reviews: we check your weight and measurements, ask about side effects and how you are getting on day to day, and decide together whether to continue, adjust or stop. Stopping is a legitimate outcome and we will tell you if we think it is the right one.
Alongside that we give practical support on eating, activity, sleep and alcohol, and we talk about keeping changes going after any treatment ends, which is the part most people find hardest. If you take other long-term medicines we can look after them through NHS prescriptions at the same time, so it is one conversation instead of several.
Blood pressure is part of the picture. Carrying extra weight pushes it up, and losing weight often brings it down, so we keep an eye on both. If you are 40 or over and have not been checked recently, our free NHS blood pressure check takes about five minutes and can be done at the same visit. People travel to our Pinner Road chemist from West Harrow, Pinner and Northwood as well as Harrow town centre, and we try to make one appointment do the work of two.
Why we do not name any weight loss medicine on this page
You will notice that no medicine is named anywhere here. That is deliberate, and it is the law. The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 prohibit advertising prescription-only medicines to the public, and the MHRA has enforced that rule firmly against weight-loss advertising in particular. Any pharmacy, clinic or website that names a prescription weight-loss product in order to promote it is breaking that rule, however slickly it is presented.
So treat a named brand in an advert as a warning sign rather than a convenience. It points to a service comfortable bending the rules, and services that cut corners on advertising often cut them on assessment too: no proper history, no measurements taken in person, no follow-up. These medicines are prescription-only precisely because someone qualified has to judge whether they fit the person in front of them.
What we can do is talk to you properly. Come into the pharmacy, or book a consultation, and our pharmacist will go through what is available for someone in your situation, what it involves and what it would mean for you, in a private room where that conversation is both allowed and appropriate. Contact us on 020 8863 6338 if you would like to ask about the process first.
